Manuka honey is known to have antibacterial properties and is derived from bees found on manuka bushes in New Zealand. For years, it has been known to cure stomach acid reflux problems and has been one of the top natural treatment solutions for heartburn.
But honey in general has been proven to neutralize gastric acidity as it control secretion of acids in the stomach, however, there were no written nor confirmed medical facts (may change) to prove it. Yet, take into consideration that most of home natural remedies are not backed by medical research.
How to Test if Honey is a Proven cure?
A test was initiated using a stomach pH meter along with a computer system called “Gastroxan-5”. So this system will calculate the gastric acid pH levels of the stomach and see if drinking manuka honey will normalize it. They did tests with 34 patients, and 26 of them did react to honey. The 76% of the group had reduced their pH levels dramatically after the solution, and the 8 others whose body didn’t responded were to be considered as individual unique cases.
As for the people who have low stomach acid that were given a cold solution of honey, they had increased their gastric acid levels as well. The 75% of the group or 12 out of 16 had success with manuka honey neutralizing their secretion, but the rest of the 4 people were considered to have a really low acid level.
So how much Honey should I take?
For people who have low stomach acidity, put 50 grams of honey in a 100 ml glass of “cold” water and take it right after meals and 3 times daily. And on the other hand, for those with high stomach acidity, a warm honey solution is for you. Get a glass of warm water and pour in 50 grams of honey into it. Take it around 60 – 90 minutes after eating. You can also take it 60 minutes before you go to bed as it will also help you sleep well.
